On the 13th of February 2024, we will come together to celebrate National Women’s Day, marking the 145th birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, fondly known as the “Nightingale of India” or “Bharat Kokila.” This remarkable woman was not only a revolutionary leader and politician but also a gifted poet. Mahatma Gandhi himself bestowed upon her these titles, recognizing her immense contributions to our nation.

As we commemorate National Women’s Day, it is important to reflect on Sarojini Naidu’s achievements and the impact she had on Indian society. Her legacy serves as a source of inspiration for women across the country, empowering them to pursue their dreams and make significant contributions to various fields.

Sarojini Naidu’s role in India’s independence movement cannot be overstated. She was an influential figure in the Indian National Congress, serving as its president in 1925. Additionally, she made history by becoming the first woman Governor of an Indian state, Uttar Pradesh. Her leadership and participation in revolutionary activities were instrumental in shaping the course of our nation’s history.

In 1975, the Indian Government officially declared February 13 as National Women’s Day to honor Sarojini Naidu’s remarkable contributions to society and politics. Since then, this day has been celebrated annually as a tribute to her legacy and patriotism.

This year, National Women’s Day 2024 holds even greater significance as we commemorate Sarojini Naidu’s 145th birth anniversary. Born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad, she hailed from a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father, Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, was a renowned principal of Nizam College, while her mother, Barada Sundari Devi, was a well-known poetess.

From a young age, Sarojini Naidu displayed exceptional brilliance and academic prowess. At just 12 years old, she achieved outstanding marks in the matriculation exams from Madras University. Her remarkable performance earned her a scholarship from the Nizam of Hyderabad to pursue higher education abroad.

At the age of sixteen, Sarojini Naidu embarked on a journey to England for her higher studies. She began her education at King’s College London before continuing her studies at Girton College, Cambridge. Her time in the United Kingdom not only honed her intellectual abilities but also exposed her to the feminist movement, which further fueled her passion for women’s rights.

As we celebrate National Women’s Day 2024, it is essential to acknowledge the significance of Sarojini Naidu’s contributions to women’s empowerment and activism. Her unwavering dedication to the cause continues to inspire generations of women to break barriers and strive for equality.

The Government of India, along with various departments across the country, recognizes the importance of Sarojini Naidu’s work and contribution. They organize events and initiatives to honor her leadership and to create awareness about the progress made in women’s rights.

On this National Women’s Day, let us come together to celebrate the achievements of women and recognize their invaluable contributions to society. Sarojini Naidu’s legacy serves as a reminder that women have the power to shape the destiny of a nation and create a more inclusive and equal society.

As we pay tribute to Sarojini Naidu’s remarkable life and work, let us also reflect on the progress we have made and the challenges that still lie ahead. National Women’s Day 2024 is an opportunity to empower and encourage women, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights are protected.

Let us celebrate National Women’s Day 2024 with pride, passion, and a commitment to creating a world where every woman can thrive and fulfill her potential.
