Every year on February 11th, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This important observance, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to promote the full and equal access and participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 70/212, officially proclaiming February 11th as the annual commemoration of this observance. Since then, each year has seen a different theme selected to highlight a particular focus and area of discussion for gender equality in science.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is implemented annually by UNESCO in collaboration with UN Women. These two organizations work closely with national governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society partners, universities, and corporations to achieve the shared goal of promoting the role of women and girls in scientific fields.

The observance serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women and girls in science. It aims to inspire and empower the next generation of female scientists, while also addressing the barriers and challenges that women face in pursuing careers in STEM.

By highlighting the accomplishments of women in science, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science aims to challenge stereotypes and break down gender biases. It seeks to create a more inclusive and diverse scientific community, where women have equal opportunities to contribute and excel.

Throughout history, women have made significant contributions to scientific progress, often in the face of adversity and discrimination. However, their achievements have often been overlooked or marginalized. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science provides a platform to correct this historical imbalance and recognize the invaluable contributions of women in shaping the world through science.

On this day, various activities and events are organized around the world to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality in science. These may include panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and mentoring programs. The aim is to encourage young girls and women to pursue their passions in STEM and provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed.

It is crucial to foster an environment where girls and women feel encouraged and supported in their pursuit of scientific careers. This means providing equal access to education, mentorship opportunities, and resources. It also involves challenging societal norms and biases that discourage girls from pursuing STEM subjects.

By celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future. We can inspire young girls to dream big and pursue their passions, knowing that they have the same opportunities as their male counterparts.

Let us come together to celebrate the achievements of women and girls in science and work towards a world where gender equality is a reality in all scientific fields. Together, we can break down barriers and create a brighter future for women and girls in STEM.
