Dimna Lake, an artificial reservoir located near the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, is a picturesque destination situated just 15 km from the city of Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand. Constructed in 1944 by Tata Steel to address the water scarcity in the city, Dimna Lake has become an essential source of drinking water for Jamshedpur town.

Spanning approximately 5.5 km2, Dimna Lake covers around 1,861 acres of land, which were acquired under the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 for the construction of the dam. Nestled at the foot of the Dalma Hills, the lake offers a tranquil setting amidst nature’s beauty.

Dimna Lake’s proximity to the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary adds to its charm. Located about 100 km from the capital city Ranchi and 15 km from the steel city Jamshedpur, the lake attracts both nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The total storage capacity of Dimna Lake is approximately 120 lakh cubic feet, with a spread of water covering approximately two square miles. The lake stretches for 3 and a half miles in length and about a mile in width. It is formed by two short dams of the composite type, one measuring 800 ft. long and the other 1,200 ft. long. The maximum height of the dam from the lowest level is 83 feet, and the maximum width at the bottom is about 400 ft.

To ensure a reliable water supply, an outlet with suitable valves is provided, and pipelines carry the water to Jamshedpur. The primary source of water generation is rainfall. The lake serves as a reservoir for harvested rainwater, supporting the local community, biodiversity, and fulfilling the municipal water demand of Jamshedpur town, particularly during the monsoon season.

The idea of constructing Dimna Lake arose in the late 1930s when Jamshedpur anticipated the possibility of water scarcity due to the city’s rapid population growth. In response, the Dimna Nala Water Supply Scheme was introduced. Construction of Dimna Lake, owned by Tata Steel in the Boram block, commenced in February 1940. The project was successfully completed, and on April 17, 1944, water was supplied to the city for the first time.

Aside from its role as a vital water source, Dimna Lake has gained popularity for its serene atmosphere and pleasant greenery. The lake is renowned as a favored picnic spot, attracting visitors with its clear water and scenic surroundings. The area also offers opportunities for mini treks into the hills and various water activities, including boating, rowing, and jet skiing.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat in nature or an exciting day of water-based adventures, Dimna Lake provides the perfect setting. Its natural beauty, combined with its significance as a water source for Jamshedpur, makes it a must-visit destination in Jharkhand.
