Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is a magnificent fort located in Amer, Rajasthan, India. Situated just 11 kilometers from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, Amer is a charming town spread across an area of 4 square kilometers. Perched high on a hill, Amer Fort is the crown jewel and the principal tourist attraction in Jaipur.

The fort is renowned for its stunning architectural style and artistic elements. As you approach the fort, you’ll be greeted by its grandeur, with large ramparts, series of gates, and cobbled paths leading the way. The fort overlooks the picturesque Maota Lake, which serves as the main source of water for the Amer Palace.

Amer Palace is a remarkable example of Rajput architecture. It showcases a seamless blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural influences. Constructed using red sandstone and marble, this opulent palace spans across four levels, each featuring a beautiful courtyard. Within the palace, you’ll find several notable attractions.

One of the highlights is the Diwan-e-Aam, also known as the “Hall of Public Audience.” This grand hall was where the Maharajas would meet with the public and address their concerns. The intricate designs and ornate decorations in this hall are truly captivating.

Another significant area within the palace is the Diwan-e-Khas, or the “Hall of Private Audience.” This intimate space was reserved for private meetings and discussions. The Diwan-e-Khas is adorned with exquisite artwork and delicate carvings, showcasing the wealth and grandeur of the Rajput rulers.

The Sheesh Mahal, also known as the “Mirror Palace” or Jai Mandir, is a true marvel. As you step inside, you’ll be mesmerized by the thousands of tiny mirrors adorning the walls and ceilings. When candlelight or sunlight illuminates the palace, it creates a breathtaking spectacle, with the entire room sparkling like a starry sky.

The Sukh Niwas, or the “Hall of Pleasure,” is another fascinating area within the palace. Here, the Rajput rulers would enjoy a cool climate, artificially created by winds blowing over a water cascade. The soothing atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make it the perfect place to relax and unwind.

The Amer Fort is often referred to as the Amer Palace due to its regal splendor. It served as the residence of the Rajput Maharajas and their families. Near the fort’s Ganesh Gate, you’ll find a temple dedicated to Shila Devi, a Goddess of the Chaitanya cult. This temple holds historical significance, as it was given to Raja Man Singh after his victory over the Raja of Jessore in 1604.

The palace itself is a testament to the royal lifestyle of the Rajput rulers. Raja Man Singh, who had 12 queens, built 12 rooms, each with a staircase connected to the king’s room. Interestingly, the queens were not allowed to go upstairs. On the other hand, Raja Jai Singh, who had only one queen, built a room equivalent to three of the old queen’s rooms.

Adjacent to Amer Fort is Jaigarh Fort, situated on the Cheel ka Teela, also known as the “Hill of Eagles.” These two forts are considered one complex, connected by a subterranean passage. This passage served as an escape route during times of war, allowing the royal family and others in Amer Fort to seek refuge in the more fortified Jaigarh Fort.

Amer Fort attracts a significant number of tourists each year, with approximately 5,000 visitors per day and 1.4 million visitors in 2007 alone. Its architectural brilliance and historical significance have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with five other forts in Rajasthan, Amer Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the group known as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

Visiting Amer Fort is like stepping back in time, immersing yourself in the rich history and culture of Rajasthan. From its stunning architecture to its breathtaking views, this majestic fort is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the vibrant city of Jaipur.
