Located 84 kms north of Udaipur in the wilderness, Kumbhalgarh is the second most important citadel after Chittorgarh in the Mewar region. Cradled in the Aravali Ranges, the fort was built in the 15th century AD by Rana Kumbha. Its strategic positioning and the rugged topography surrounding it give the fort an air of invincibility.

The Kumbhalgarh Fort served as a refuge for the rulers of Mewar during times of strife. It even provided sanctuary to King Udai of Mewar in his early childhood when Banbir killed Vikramaditya and seized the throne. This historic site holds immense sentimental significance for the people as it is the birthplace of Mewar’s legendary king, Maharana Pratap.

The fort’s impressive defenses could be breached only once, when the combined armies of the Mughal and Amber attacked due to scarcity of drinking water. Despite this, Kumbhalgarh Fort remains a symbol of resilience and strength.

Stretching over 36 kms, the fort’s massive walls are wide enough to accommodate eight horses abreast. This architectural marvel was renovated in the 19th century by Maharana Fateh Singh. As you explore the fort, you’ll come across a magnificent array of temples built by the Mauryas. Among them, the most picturesque is the Badal Mahal, also known as the palace of the clouds. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the surrounding landscape.

Walking around the fort’s large compound, you’ll encounter intriguing ruins that offer a glimpse into the rich history of the region. It’s an educational experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the stories of the past.

To visit Kumbhalgarh Fort, you can easily take regular buses or hire a taxi from Udaipur city. The nearest airport is in Udaipur, just 98 km away. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking a unique adventure, a trip to Kumbhalgarh Fort is a must when exploring the wonders of Rajasthan.
